Personally I have struggled to convert to drawing things digitally, I’m so used to working on paper.
I find that it takes me two or three times longer to produce work digitally than it would for me to draw. There is obvious differences in the how work looks and I’m not sure I have a preference, each method of working has its own charm. However Rhubarb and Custard for example should have been left alone, recently a new computer version has been on television. The animators have tried to recreate the colour variations that were caused by felt tip pen and not being able to maintain exact colour, unfortunately it looks like they haven’t achieved the same charm that the hand drawn version had. I think this example illustrates that pen and ink still have a place in animation.

train people
Train people.
I have a really bad habit of finding myself starring at people on trains, busses, cafes or where ever I am really. So I have started to keep a wee note book about my impressions of people so I can develop characters using the information.
Random lady- look roughly 28ish. Smartly dressed, looks professional maybe an office worker . She’s writing in a spiral notepad, strikes me as a workaholic cramming in extra work when and where ever she can. Is she trying to get a promotion, or is she simply trying to impress all her colleagues by doing the brunt of the work for them. She’s more than likely single maybe has a cat or some other wee pet to keep her company. The lady has over protective parents who are constantly interfering in her life, trying to set her up with hopeless men.
Guitar boy - a boy with a guitar on his way to jam at his friends house. He’s the guitarist for a band that’s made up of four of his friends. They play in the arty café bars around the city centre. They only really get gigs because they are part of the right crowd, the music they play is alright but its nothing special. He is a only child, parents are divorced, both are financially well off so he’s been spoiled always had everything he wants, handed to him on a plate, because they each feel guilty and are over compensating. He has a girlfriend who has been with him since secondary school, she’s sleeping with his best friend because she is bored with her relationship, but she doesn’t want to break it off because she has it in her head that his band will become big, and she likes the idea of dating a star.
Dude with I-Pod - Quiet, nice, hardworking, family man. He’s on his way home from work, hes desperate to get home to his wife and new baby son. The I-Pod he’s listening to was a present from his wife, it was a total surprise as they are so broke having to care for a new baby.
On the surface he’s a well rounded really nice guy, but he has a secret! He’s really a cross dresser and when his wife is out he opens a bottle of wine and heads for her wardrobe.

flip boom wee review
Wee review of Flip Boom
A few days ago I downloaded the trial version of Flip Boom, its almost like a over simplified version Toon Boom. Its very user friendly, its has large bright buttons for its various functions, which make it easy to navigate around the program. Some of its features are onion skin, draw behind, erase, paint, brush. There is a strip along the bottom for frames, it has a preview of the image on each frame, this adds to the clarity of the program.
The program is all about being user friendly, it’s a great piece of software for kids or just to mess around and have fun with. Obviously it lacks the full range of features that its big brother Toon Boom has like lip-sync, and being able to add sound.
